It is particularly challenging for women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields due to enduring gender discrimination and bias entrenched in male-dominated sectors, which perpetuate cultural stereotypes about women and their abilities. Dr. Armi Cunanan-Yabut is well-acquainted with this struggle. In an interview, she revealed experiencing gender bias throughout her career in civil engineering, an industry predominantly composed of men. However, she successfully broke through barriers and carved out her path in the field by remaining true to herself and embracing her capabilities as a woman.
Carrying the burden of proving her worth by working twice as hard as others, Dr. Cunanan-Yabut focused on developing her skills, knowledge, and determination to succeed. As a result, she continues to demonstrate that gender does not limit one's capabilities or potential for success. From obtaining her license as a civil engineer to her current role as the Executive Director of Far Eastern University Diliman, these were the moments where she truly felt empowered.
As a woman, she fully embraces the leadership role and sees it as an opportunity to advocate for women's empowerment, gender diversity, and inclusion by emphasizing the equal significance of both men and women in her community.
“I believe that leadership knows no gender and that what truly matters are commitment and responsibility. Through my actions and words, I strive to create an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and succeed,” Dr. Cunanan-Yabut stated regarding her advocacy for women's empowerment at FEU Diliman.
She hopes for a future where women receive equal opportunities and recognition for their contributions. While awaiting this progress, she advises all women not to let negative comments or biases deter them from pursuing their dreams. Instead, they should use them as fuel to propel themselves forward.
“By breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future,” she added.
Dr. Cunanan-Yabut’s journey can be seen as a collective effort of women breaking societal norms, paving the way for future generations to dream beyond limitations and move towards inclusivity. Therefore, advocating for gender equality will always be an integral part of her leadership.
